Meet Claude

Anthropic's AI assistant — the writer's choice. Careful, conversational, and great with long documents.

AI Basics·5 min read

Claude is made by Anthropic, a company started by former OpenAI researchers focused on AI safety. The product reflects that: Claude tends to be thoughtful, honest about what it doesn't know, and pleasant to talk to.

Why people love it

Two reasons come up over and over: the writing is better, and it handles long stuff really well. If you paste in a 100-page report or a full book chapter, Claude can reason about the whole thing without losing track.

What it's good at

  • Writing — drafts that need less editing. Less corporate, more natural voice.
  • Editing — give it your draft, ask for honest feedback. It will give honest feedback.
  • Long documents — contracts, research papers, codebases, transcripts.
  • Coding — many developers consider Claude the strongest coding assistant available.
  • Nuanced conversations — ethics, advice, sensitive topics. It handles them with care.

Notable features

  • Artifacts — when Claude writes code, a document, or a diagram, it appears in a side panel you can edit and download.
  • Projects — pinned context (files, instructions) that Claude remembers across many chats.
  • Computer use — Claude can actually control a computer for you (still experimental).

Free vs. paid

claude.ai has a free tier with daily message limits. Claude Pro (around $20/month) raises limits and gives access to the strongest models and Projects.

When to choose Claude

When the writing quality matters. When you need to work with long documents. When you want an AI that's more likely to say "I'm not sure" than to make something up.
